What to Expect:
As your host, Shane kicks the evening off with some of his best material on brainy topics, before introducing special guest speakers and performers. Guests range from Ivy League professors presenting groundbreaking academic research to local stand-up comedians delivering their most cerebral material.

At the end of the night, Shane brings all the guests back onstage and opens the floor for a Q&A and interactive discussion with the audience.

About the host and origins of Stand Up Science:
Shane Mauss leads two lives.
In one life, he tours full-time as a stand-up comedian. Shane has brought his unique blend of absurdist humor, thoughtful insights and storytelling to cities all over the world, as well as TV spots on Conan, Kimmel, Comedy Central, Showtime, BBC, Epix and more.

In his other life as the host of the podcast Here We Are, he’s interviewed over 200 of the world’s leading academic experts about our most fascinating traits and behaviors while finding the funny in the innermost workings of life. Dr. David Ferrier
Dr. Ferrier is an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His research centers around the development of social, emotional, and self-regulatory abilities in children, particularly early childhood. His applied work focuses on how parents, peers, and particularly teachers can act as important socializers of these social, emotional, and cognitive skills which are strongly related to both early and enduring social and academic success. Dr. Ferrier’s background in both developmental and school psychology allows for real-world experiences and advice to permeate the developmental courses he teaches in child and adolescent development. Dr. Ferrier’s current research continues in local and surrounding preschool centers, working with teachers and administrators to help ensure that children get a high-quality education and are ready for the larger tasks of more formal schooling.

Dr. Stylianos Chatzimanolis
Stelios Chatzimanolis is a Guerry Professor of Biology at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. His main research focus is the biodiversity and evolutionary history of rove beetles. He has described more than 100 species of rove beetles from Central and South America as new to science. He has recently embarked on a beetle inventory of the Tennessee Valley and is also interested in describing long dead fossil beetles from various formations around the world.
