Stand-up Comedians + Scientists = Stand Up Science

Award-winning stand-up comedian and science podcast host Shane Mauss presents Stand Up Science!

Learn and laugh as local scientists, comedians and other special guests join Shane to bring you an unforgettable 2 hour show that is equal parts ahas and hahas

Stand-up comedy and science have a lot in common. They both reveal truth, change our perceptions, and challenge the status quo. So why are they so underappreciated? Admittedly, comedy sometimes underestimates the intelligence of their audience, catering to the lowest common denominator. And science has the stigma of being overly complicated, unrelatable or boring. Until now.

Funnier and more provocative than TED Talks, while smarter than traditional stand-up comedy, Stand Up Science combines the best of both worlds. This thought-provoking night of laughs will leave you a little smarter, a little happier and send you home with plenty of fuel for your own conversations.

What to Expect:
As your host, Shane kicks the evening off with some of his best material on brainy topics, before introducing special guest speakers and performers. Guests range from Ivy League professors presenting groundbreaking academic research to local stand-up comedians delivering their most cerebral material.

At the end of the night, Shane brings all the guests back onstage and opens the floor for a Q&A and interactive discussion with the audience.

Barrett Klein
Some suggest that covertly tucked inside Barrett Klein's insect-adorned apparel rests an additional pair of segmented legs, and conceivably at least one pair of wings. Boneless and spineless, he is said to sport a chitinous exoskeleton. Behind each prosthetic eye are purported to be thousands of lenses forming a compound eye able to detect the slightest change in light and motion.

In a perpetual state of pupation, Barrett earned degrees in entomology, then created natural history exhibits for the American Museum of Natural History and Chase Studio, and is now Associate Professor of Entomology and Animal Behavior at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse studying sleep behavior in insects and creating entomo-art to promote respect and admiration for the gloriously diverse lineage of six-legged wonders.

Nese Nasif
Nese Nasif is an Assistant Professor of Marketing in the College of Business Administration at University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, where she teaches courses on and publishes research related to marketing communications, consumer behavior, and international business.

Mike Lester
Mike Lester is a standup comedian and actor originally from Minneapolis, MN. He was voted one of Minnesota's City Pages "Artists of the Year" in 2016. Mike ran a popular online sketch series with his group Lestaril, which led to the lead role in "Beware of Brobots," a national ad campaign for Sonobi. In 2017, he appeared in two online ads for CHEEZ-ITS produced by Funny Or Die, and starred in a national commercial for the product Screenflair. "Screenflair screen protectors bring the front of your device to life with unique designs that go around and even on your screen." (Screenflair.com) You can catch some of Mike’s stand-up on the sixth Season of “Coming to the Stage” on PlutoTV.
